[movies]Resonant Dust Ring Sculpted by a Super-Earth - Christopher Stark, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
A planet twice the mass of Earth shepherds dust near its orbit into a circumstellar ring structure. Both the planet and the dust structure orbit the host star with a period of 5.2 years. Two regions of enhanced dust density lead and trail the planet, which causes periodic localized brightening. This simulation was computed using NASA GSFC's 420-processor Thunderhead cluster. Stark used the cluster to create a catalog of debris-disk structures caused by Earth-like planets...

[movies]GSFC Day: From Greenbelt to Galaxies - NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), located in Greenbelt, Maryland, was named after the father of rocketry, Dr. Robert H. Goddard. His zest for innovation and discovery still lives, from the engineers that design and build new technology, to the scientists who study the earth, the solar system, and the universe. To learn more about our missions and all of the new activities taking place at GSFC visit us on the web at http://www.nasa.gov/goddard...

[movies]Potassium Aerosols - Chere Petty, University of Maryland, Baltimore County NSF grant DBI-0722569
Potassium is an alkali metal that occurs naturally bound to other elements in seawater and minerals. Mineral aerosols, such as Saharan dust and sea salt, can be the source of water-soluble potassium. Video courtesy of Chere Petty, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; NSF grant DBI-0722569. Note: Microscope video of potassium particles. Animator: Megan Willy (UMBC). Producer: Maria Frostic (UMBC)...

[movies]Senator Mikulski Celebrates Hubble Success - NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center
The Hubble Space Telescope has been with us for nearly two decades. In that time, its breathtaking images have captured peoples imaginations and its groundbreaking science has revealed some of the many secrets of our universe. After five spacewalks by the STS-125 mission to repair Hubble, commander Scott "Scooter" Altman confirmed a successful release of the Hubble telescope from the Space Shuttle Atlantis.Shortly after the deploy, Maryland Sen...

[movies]Soot and Sulfate Still Images and Video of Tractor Soot Particle - Still image courtesy of Peter Buseck, Arizona State University. Video courtesy of Chere Petty, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; NSF grant DBI-0722569.
Aerosols are complex particles; they can occur in nature but can also be generated by humans. Black carbon, or soot, is generated from industrial pollution, traffic, outdoor fires, and household burning of coal and biomass fuels. Soot is a product of incomplete combustion, especially of coal, diesel fuels, biofuels and outdoor biomass burning. When soot absorbs sunlight, it heats the surrounding air and reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the ground...

[movies]Sea Salt Aerosols - Chere Petty, University of Maryland, Baltimore County NSF grant DBI-0722569.
Aerosols are complex particles; they can occur in nature but can also be generated by humans. One source of naturally-occurring aerosols is the ocean-wave activity which propels salt particles into the air. These particles then serve as cloud condensation nuclei and lead to cloud formation. Sea salt still image courtesy of Chere Petty, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; NSF grant DBI-0722569 Note: Microscope video of sea salt...

[movies]Goddard Space Flight Center Divers - NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Music by Michael McClare
Note: In planning for Servicing Mission 4 to Hubble, crew members divide their time between NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston, working underwater on a Hubble mock-up to simulate the effects of weightlessness, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, where they practice scheduled mission tasks on a Hubble mock-up inside a large clean room facility. Many Goddard engineers are trained divers...
